As a group there’s more uncertainty about the Eagles Cornerbacks than any other position. This group includes retreads, holdovers, rookies and 2015 injured players. The headliner of the group is 9 year veteran Leodis McKelvin. McKelvin is 5’10 185 from Troy. He won’t blow you away but he’s a dependable starter whom the young guys can lean on. Joining McKelvin from Buffalo is Ron Brooks. Brooks from LSU will be entering his 5th NFL Season. Brooks was primarily brought in for Special Teams reasons. He will be the primarily gunner on punt and kick offs. He will only help a solid coverage unit from last year. Returning from last years team is Nolan Carroll, Denzel Rice, Eric Rowe, JaCorey Shepherd, Jalen Watkins and Randall Evans. At this point in through OTA’s Eric Rowe will start opposite McKelvin. He had an up and down rookie season but as a whole I thought he faired quite well. He finished strong after a Thanksgiving Day game low point (thanks to moron Billy Davis).
JaCorey Shepherd really intrigues me. He was solid at Kansas but never played last year due to an ACL injury. Randall Evans (another 2015 Rookie) didn’t really make an impact last year. He spent most of his time on the practice squad and will have to fight to make the 53 this year. In my opinion he’s a long shot at best. Mentioned in our safety review is rookie Jalen Mills. Mills will enter his rookie season as a CB however his best long term prospects will be at safety. It will be interesting to see how plays during camp the preseason. Un-drafted Aaron Grymes has really turned heads through OTA’s. He’s made an impact and has stuck out through multiple practices. At best I feel he’s a nickel CB but it’s good to hear young guys making an impact.
*Update – I was on twitter this am and per bleeding green nation it looks like Fletcher Cox was spotted on a plane on his way to Philadelphia. With mandatory minicamps around the corner maybe a long term deal could be with in reach.
