Carolina Panthers- OT Jason Spriggs (Indiana)
The franchise tag was unexpectedly rescinded by the Panthers from All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman removing one of the playmakers in the Carolina secondary. I think the Panthers will address the need later in the draft or another possible free agent rather than taking a cornerback in the first round. Starting right tackle Mike Remmers will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2016 season so his future is unclear with the Panthers. Many will remember Remmers getting eaten alive by Von Miller in the Super Bowl although Miller does that to many tackles in the NFL when single blocked. Jason Spriggs from Indiana stands at 6’6 and has the athletic frame which NFL general managers’ covet for the position. He was a four year starter during his time with the Hoosiers so the experience is there as well playing the tackle spot. Spriggs had a strong week in Mobile at the Senior Bowl and parlayed that into a nice showing at the NFL combine which has boosted his stock considerably. For a big man he possesses the ability to move well in space and reach blockers at different levels of the defense. He will need a year to adjust to the NFL game and improve his skillset within an NFL offensive line coach to correct his deficiencies. The Panthers have the luxury of bringing back their entire starting line from last season so Spriggs is a nice player to develop for the future. As I mentioned earlier, Remmers could be playing for a different team in 2017 leaving a tackle spot open for Spriggs in his sophomore season.
