New York Jets- LB Reggie Ragland (Alabama)
The Jets actually have question marks along their defensive line regarding the status of Pro Bowl tackle Muhammad Wilkerson and whether the team will move him during draft time. The team also lost nose tackle Damone Harrison to the Giants during free agency even though they replaced him by signing Steve Mclendon from the Steelers. Gang Green still has last year’s first round pick Leonard Williams as well as Sheldon Richardson to start in the trenches. Starting inside linebacker Demario Davis left during free agency as well to sign with the Browns don’t ask me why. Former Cowboy Bruce Carter was signed to add depth to the position. Reggie Ragland is my selection for the Jets at pick 20. He is an old-school linebacker that brings a toughness which his college coach Nick Saban loves in his leaders. He is not afraid to meet blockers in the hole and would be able to hold his own from day one in the running game. Ragland is praised by scouts for his knowledge of the position along with his instincts to track the ball carrier. As is the case with most physical linebackers, Ragland’s game speed has been called into question. He reminds me a lot of former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. Scouts say Ragland is able to hold his own in zone coverage, but may struggle with man on man assignments. Head coach Todd Bowles is a very good defensive coach and I believe he could scheme his defense to the strengths of Ragland. The Jets already have a quality starting linebacker in David Harris and Reggie Ragland would pair very well with him. If for some reason the Jets decided to move Wilkerson, I could also see Ragland’s college teammate Jarran Reed being in play at pick 20.
