Eagles Focus Mock Draft: Pick 12 New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints- DE Shaq Lawson (Clemson)

Lawson is coming off a tremendous season with the Tigers where he was finally given the opportunity to start full time.  He racked up 12.5 sacks on the season and also recorded 25.5 tackles for loss.  The Saints will be operating defensively under former Raiders head coach Dennis Allen who is taking over for Rob Ryan.  You may remember Allen for his time in Oakland when he was fired after the team’s loss in London and then proceeded to fly coach back to the States.  New Orleans is still very thin up front and can use all the pass rushing help they can get.  The Saints defense finished tied for 25th overall in 2015 recording only 31 sacks as a team.  Lawson has versatility to play in multiple schemes according to scouts due in large part to his thick frame.  He is incredibly powerful at the point of attack and scouts praise him for his ability to fend off double teams.  On the down side, Lawson is not known for being a great athlete and does not possess the edge rush speed which certain teams covet.  It remains to be seen whether Lawson fits better as a 3-4 outside linebacker or if he will stay at 4-3 defensive end.  Either way the Saints need players in their front seven and Lawson will be able to provide a toughness they desperately need.  He can pair opposite Cam Jordan to provide the Saints a more formidable pass rush for 2016.
