San Francisco 49ers- QB Carson Wentz (North Dakota State)
Chip Kelly failed to ever establish a franchise quarterback during his time with the Eagles as head coach and also one failed year as general manager. I believe the 49ers will have their pick between Wentz and the local product from Cal Jared Goff. Rumors have been swirling for a majority of the offseason that San Francisco was seeking to move Colin Kaepernick and his displeasure with the franchise. I still believe Kap will be wearing a different uniform in 2016 regardless of what the 49ers say. Back to Wentz he is considered to be the number one rated quarterback in the 2016 class. He measures in at 6’5, 237 pounds so the frame is certainly there to be a proficient NFL quarterback for some time. The main knock on Wentz is the level of play he faced during his time at North Dakota State where he was a starter for two seasons. Obviously, the speed of the game will be much faster going from Division I-AA to the NFL. However, many scouts believe Wentz is ready to make the jump and his skillset projects him to be a starting NFL quarterback for years to come. Wentz doesn’t have a tremendous arm, but makes up for the lack of power with his precision accuracy. He also has mobility which most bigger quarterbacks don’t have to escape out of the pocket and make tough throws on the run. It remains to be seen whether Wentz will be ready to start Day 1 regardless of the team he goes to, but the majority of scouts believe Wentz can be a quality starter once developed. If Wentz goes to San Francisco he may start off behind incumbent Blaine Gabbert until he’s fully ready to go in Chip Kelly’s fast pace system as we know all too well.
