The Eagles and Giants met for the 167th time last night at LFF. This was a game the Eagles needed to win for obvious reasons. They couldn’t afford to go down 0-3 in the division and now sit in 1st place in the NFC East. Yes Bradford struggled but this game was more about the defense for me. After allowing an opening drive TD the Eagles shut down the Giants for 3 1/2 quarters and really set the tone on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively this was a struggle. However they were able to run the football. The run game is the silver lining for me personally. It’s a simple formula. When the Eagles run the ball effectively they win games. In their 3 wins this year they average around 150.00 yards. In their 3 losses they average around 50.00. Here’s my prediction from the preview blog:
Prediction – The Eagles have beaten the Giants 3 games in a row dating back to the 2013 season. At some point the Giants will beat the Eagles. I don’t see that happening tonight. The Eagles have their backs against the wall with their current standing in the division. If they want make it to the second season they must defend their home field and beat the Giants. Falling to 0-3 in the division will all put cripple their chances at a division title and put them 2 games behind the division leading Giants. Eagles 27 – Giants 20.
WHAT I LIKED
Pass Rush – Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham really got after Eli Manning last night. They were able to move him off his spot disrupt throwing lanes and were a force all night. Connor Barwin didn’t record a sack but was also a force. Ike Reese brought this up on WIP this morning and it’s a fair point – Barwin was moving around all game and really opened things for the Curry and Graham.
Offensive Line – 4/5 guys on this unit had a nice game. I”ll get to the 5th later. This unit paved the way for 153 rushing yards for the Eagles RBs. They kept Bradford upright for 4 quarters allowing only 1 sack. These guys have been under the gun all season but over the last couple weeks have really started to gel. The Eagles will go as far as this OL takes them. Right now they are doing a good job.
Billy Davis – I’m not the biggest Billy Davis fan, mainly because of his inability to adjust in game. However last night his game plan and in game adjustments were fantastic. After an opening drive he did a nice job rolling coverages and switching up things last second to confuse Eli Manning and the Giants passing game. OBJ had a nice first half. Overall he caught 7 balls for 61 yards and 1 TD. He was shut out in the second half.
The Defense – These guys deserve all the credit for the Eagles fighting back to 3-3 and now leading the NFC East. Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan again dominated the line of scrimmage and stopped the run all game. We mentioned the pass rush but DeMeco Ryans and Jordan Hicks did their part as well. Mufasa had a game changing interception that really turned the momentum. Through 6 weeks in the NFL season the Eagles lead the league in forcing turnovers. Nolan Carroll added to that total with a pick 6. Carroll is playing like 63 million dollar man so far.
Caleb Sturgis – Sturgis was 2/2 on FGs and 3/3 on extra points. He needs to keep this up as missed FG’s can really turn momentum. He was perfect Monday.
WHAT I DIDNT LIKE
Jason Kelce – If I’m being real with myself Jason Kelce is the week point on this OL right now. Bradford has no idea when or where the snaps are going to come. High, low, left, right or completely over his head. Kelce needs to pick it up. He’s paid like one of the best centers in the league and needs to start playing like it. Not a rookie.
Sam Bradford – Bradford was Badford He threw 3 INTs for the fist time since the first start of his career back in 2010. What’s more alarming about this interceptions is not the throw itself but the decision making and timing of the turnovers. Sam has been awful in the redzone and has really cost the Eagles a number of points and even a game going back to the Dallas home opener. He needs to improve. Reports surfaced at the beginning of the year that he turned down a contract offer betting on himself. Right now that’s not looking so good. For his sake I hope he turns it around.
Byron Maxwell – Break out the boxing gloves this week at practice Chip. Watching Maxwell cover OBJ was comical. He was grabbing and holding all game. He was flagged on multiple occasions with both hands full of jersey. Maxwell has been solid the last couple games but last night was not one of his better performances.
Mike Schmidt once said only in Philadelphia “could you experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day.” This might be one of those games but after all a win is a win is a win….
Next week the Eagles go down the Carolina for a SNF primetime showdown agains the Panthers. The Panthers might be feeling themselves after tough road win against Seattle. Could there be a let down?
