Week 5 Matchups to Watch- Eagles Offense vs. Saints Defense

Another week down and more questions surrounding this Eagles offense.  Chip has blamed himself for play calling and also players for their execution.  Safe to say it’s a mixture of both.  The Saints defense is terrible and if the Eagles can’t put together drives this week there really is no hope.  The offensive line is still a problem and we’ll see if Jason Peters suits up this weekend.  Rookie linebacker Stephone Anthony has impressed for New Orleans.

Lane Johnson vs. Cameron Jordan

Big Lane is playing on a bad knee (sprained MCL) but he’s already declared he will play because “we ain’t got nobody else.”  I like that attitude from the big Oklahoma product and we’ll see if that carries over to his play on the field.  Jordan is by far the Saints best pass rusher and will give Johnson trouble I think.  The Eagles need to run at Jordan to let Lane establish a flow for the game rather than back pedaling right off the jump.  Look for some help on that side if possible especially since Matt Tobin will be at right guard again.

Jordan Matthews vs. Brandon Browner

Browner is one of the most physical corners in the league and lined up in the slot with Cowboys tight end Jason Witten last week.  I expect Rob Ryan to do the same this week on the Eagles best receiver.  Matthews has made some nice catches this year, but has far too many drops for a potential number 1 receiver.  Browner relies on his physical play and also pays for it in the penalty department.  Matthews is crucial to the Eagles passing game since the outside receivers are still a question mark despite last week’s success.

Darren Sproles vs. Former Team

Sproles has been the best player on both sides of the ball this year in my opinion.  He is electric in the return game and bails this team out on 3rd downs as well.  You can bet he will have a little extra incentive this week going up against his former team that traded him for a 5th round pick.  Even his wife made it very clear they were upset when the trade went down.  Sproles is very familiar with the Saints and has a clear advantage over anyone covering him from New Orleans.
