The Eagles defense did an admirable job on Sunday against Dallas, but we all know the offense did absolutely nothing to help them all game. They really only gave up six points since Donnie Jones had a punt blocked and Byron Maxwell was so gassed he had no chance against Terrence Williams who blew right past him. Cedric Thornton, Kiko Alonso, and Mychal Kendricks will all miss this week’s game against the Jets. Alonso might be done for the season according to various outlets. Thornton has a hand injury and should be back in a few weeks. Kendricks said he might be able to play, but I highly doubt it after he injured his hamstring versus Dallas.
Taylor Hart vs. James Carpenter
Hart will likely slide into Thornton’s left defensive end role opposite Carpenter who starts at guard for New York. The Jets like to run the football and Hart will need to hold his own on that side. He has Bennie Logan and Fletcher Cox up front with him so he won’t need to be Superman. Hart played 26 snaps in Week 2 and that number will rise this week. I expect Vinny Curry to see the bulk of his snaps in pass rushing downs as well as outside linebacker on occasion. Carpenter and D’Brickashaw Ferguson makes for a solid left side of the line for the Jets who look to go improve to 3-0 on the season.
Demeco Ryans vs. Chris Ivory
This is more of a matchup favorable to Ryans than a shifty back in weeks past. Ivory is a downhill runner who does not shy away from contact. Ryans will need to quarterback the defense with Alonso and Kendricks both out. Rookie Jordan Hicks filled in admirably last week and preseason standout Najee Goode was resigned as well on Tuesday. Ryans played 60 snaps last week so let’s see how his body responds this week not even a year removed from his second Achilles tear. Ivory had 57 yards on 14 carries against the Colts. If the Jets have the lead they will play ball control and pound Ivory to wear out the Eagles constantly tired defense.
Nolan Carroll vs. Eric Decker
This matchup comes with an asterisk as Decker hurt his knee on Monday night so his status for Week 3 is still in the air. If Decker does suit up quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will look his way as he’s done the first two weeks which resulted in Jets victories. Decker has 10 catches for 134 yards with two scores so far in 2015. He’s more of an intermediate target that could hurt the Eagles. I put Carroll in this matchup because Maxwell will likely line up with Brandon Marshall on the other side. I honestly think Carroll hasn’t been that bad thus far. He couldn’t stop Julio Jones in Week 1 but neither can the rest of the league. Carroll is much more reliable than the two starting corners last year so that’s a start. Carroll also played 82 total snaps last week just an FYI including a nice take down of a fan running onto the field.
