Eagles vs Packers
August 22, 8:00 PM
The Eagles head to Lambeau Field this Saturday night for their 3rd preseason game. This will be the final tune up for the expected starters as they get ready for the 2015 season. The biggest question going into this game is how long the starters will play? The Packers suffered arguably the worst news of the preseason last week vs the Steelers when Jordy Nelson went down with a torn ACL. The injury happened on a non-contact play which sparked debates on the length of the preseason all week through out the various networks. We hope to have more to come on this issue in the near future.
Bradford has a nice debut last week. He took some hits, made some accurate throws and led the Eagles on an opening scoring drive. Bradford and Jordan Matthews have had a connection all camp. Look for them to continue to be sharp in this final tune up. Last week Agholor and Bradford couldn’t seem to connect. As they continue to practice together the familiarity with one another will develop.
Can Kenjon Barner continue his dynamic preseason? He has already turned heads with his return skills and overall play out of the backfield. Another solid performance from Barner and he is all but a lock to make this roster.
One player we were looking forward to watching this week was ILB Emmanuel Acho. Up to this point he had a fantastic camp and preseason. He was on the field the entire time the first two games. The eagles have already had some injuries at the LB spot. They waived Acho with and injury settlement. I have a feeling Acho will be back with the team with an IR designation for return.
There has been some discussion regarding how long Rodgers will play if at all. Hopefully he does play a little. Playing against the best in the league would be a nice test for our up and coming secondary. During practice this week Rowe and Carroll had switched positions. The Eagles like interchangeable players so this could be a non issue or they really want to see what Rowe looks like outside. I do expect Carroll to see some snaps at the slot, a position he admitted, “hasn’t played since his rookie year.” Vinny Curry will continue his transition at least for the time being to OLB. He had some ups and downs last week but overall I thought he played ok.
Nelson Agholor has been as advertised so far. During the first couple games he has made plays all over the field. He has had some hick-ups so far with some drops and a fumble negated by a penalty. Let’s see if he can grow and improve on the little things on a game to game basis. This is all about being a professional for Agholor. Josh Huff missed two days of practice due to the death of his god brother. It is unsure as to whether he will play this Saturday. I don’t expect him too and if he does he will be very limited. I’m more interested in the WR’s on the back end of this roster. There are a few guys for essentially one maybe two spots. Rasheed Bailey is quietly making a case. The D3 standout has been very steady this camp. He will need to continue his progression. Jeff Mcclane of the Inquirer said yesterday he thought, “Miles Austin was a lock to make the roster.” Not sure I agree, but if true Austin could mentor these young wide outs, thus leaving one spot less for the likes Bailey and others.
Cody Parkey had a bounce back game after a struggling start. Look for him to be perfect on PAT’s. He did miss a 55 yard FG last week but like I said in the recap blog its hard to hold that against him.
As long as the Eagles can come through with minimal, non serious injuries I’ll view this game as a success.
