Eagles vs Ravens
Saturday Aug 22, 7:00 PM
After 3 days of practices concluding today the Eagles and Ravens will square off in the second preseason game on Saturday. Both teams have been able to get by so far with out serious injuries during the first game. Let’s hope this trend continues as the Eagles are unveiling some new weapons. All signs point towards Sam Bradford getting his first start of the preseason. This blog could honestly be one word: BRADFORD. You can bold it, underline do whatever you want but all eyes will be on new Eagles QB Sam Bradford. How will he look in the pocket? How will he command and run the offense? These are all things we as fans and the Eagles are looking forward too. More importantly, when he’s hit will he get back up? In my opinion best case scenario is Bradford plays a couple series and takes some nice hits. Getting those first couple hits out of the way is always a good way to clear the cobwebs.
Half way through the 2nd Quarter we might get our glimpse Barkley and then Tebow during the second half. Barkley had a nice outing throwing for 192 yards and leading a TD drive. I still think he has a leg up on this competition. Can Tebow close the gap? He needs to improve off of his play against the Colts. I’m looking for the ball to come out quicker and for him to be more decisive in his reads. In my opinion that was the main different between him and Barkley. This offense is a timing offense so the ball needs to be out and on time.
I’m not sure if DeMarco Murray will play. He has had a very limited work load so far (which is totally fine be me) but at some point he is going to need some live reps. Mathews should get more carries and playing time. Last week he only carried the rock twice. I am looking forward to watching Kenjon Barner. Can he improve off of last weeks performance? His standing with in the 53 man roster is completely in his hands.
Nelson Agholor needs to continue his progression through the offense. He had an outstanding first game but there are a couple things he can improve on. A couple of drops including a key 3 & 12 are some of a few things he can work on. I need to see something from Josh Huff. He was MIA last week and did not make a difference. He caught no passes, but was wide open on the Barkley tipped INT where he was the intended WR. I need to see a little something out of him on Saturday.
The Eagles Defensive line last week was dominate against the run. Bennie Logan and Fletcher Cox look like they’re thriving in the Eagles two gap style. The Ravens have a veteran offensive line so this will be a good test for them. Will all 3 key ILB’s play? Kiko is coming off a concussion and all signs indicate he will play. DeMeco Ryan’s did no play last week either however coming off an achilles injury last year I wouldn’t mind if they held him out again. Ryan’s is a veteran and knows how to handle himself and his body. He also knows the system very well. I do expect Mychal Kendricks to play. Kendricks has almost been the forgotten man this camp. With Ryan’s and Alonso’s injuries he has gone under the radar. Lets not forget what a good player Kendricks’ is.
The slot CB position involves a lot guys vying for playing time. Jayden Watkins got the start vs the Colts. He might get some extended time at the position on Saturday. Eric Rowe had a nice debut last week forcing a fumble and making some key plays. I expect him and Denzel Rice to get a lot of playing time. Rice isn’t a lock for this roster. He needs to get the attention of the coaches. The safety position has been under the microscope since OTA’s. Walter Thurmond has been given the first chance opposite Jenkins. Ed Reynolds was arguably the star of the defense last week, having two INT’s and almost a 3rd. I don’t expect anything from Earl Wolff and we’ll leave it at that. If Reynolds has a half way decent game he will make this team over Wolff. I’ve predicted Wolff will not make this roster regardless of how Reynolds plays.
Cody Parkey needs to improve off of last weeks performance. I’m not too concerned about the FG’s but PAT needs to be better. He left a few out to the right.
As we have said time and time again, it’s all about injuries. The Eagles need to start the regular season with all hands on deck.
