August 16, Sunday 1:00 PM
The Eagles take the field this Sunday against the Colts in their much anticipated 2015 preseason debut. Although this is a preseason game this game has some regular season story lines. The Colts as an organization have a lot of ties to the Eagles. Former players Trent Cole, Todd Herremans and Frank Gore (although he agreed in principle and never signed with the Eagles or actually played a game) come back to Lincoln Financial Field. Ryan Grigson will also make his return as the Colts GM for the first time. He worked closely with Howie Roseman in the Front Office before taking the job with the Colts.
The Eagles have a lot of new faces this year however we will not see some of these players on Sunday. Sam Bradford will not suit up, which in all honesty I’m ok with. He’s had a nice camp but at some point will have to get some live reps. I expect him to play next week against the Ravens. Kiko Alonso will not play either as he is still dealing with concussion issues. I would not expect to see DeMarco Murray either. The Eagles have eased him through camp so far and I don’t believe he will be in uniform Sunday.
I will be watching the rookies as much as possible. The Eagles need to see what they have in the defensive backfield. Who will grab the nickel position after recent injuries? Hopefully we will see some positives from Eric Rowe, Denzel Rice and although he’s not a rookie, I’m looking forward to Jaylen Watkins as well. Another key point of interest will be the offensive line. Barbre looks to be a lock at LG however the competition at RG will be on center stage. Gardner will get the start but we will get good look at Tobin and John Moffitt as well.
Mark Sanchez will start and probably get a series or two. Hopefully that’s the case because we will get our fill of Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow. This 3rd QB spot is still up for grabs. It will be interesting to see how Tebow looks and see exactly what he has been working on for the last 2 years. I also expect to see some better play out of Barkley. It’s now his 3rd year in this system so I fully believe he will be able to get the ball up and down the field.
From a WR standpoint its all about 2 players. Josh Huff who we have covered a bunch here at Birds Scoop and rookie Nelson Agholor. I”ll be watching Agholor’s route running and awareness. I want to see how that stacks up at the NFL level. How crisp will get he in and out of his breaks?
Special Teams will be interesting because of the new PAT rule. I was watching a bunch of preseason games last night and a lot of teams went for 2. Is this where we will see Tim Tebow? Cody Parkey was automatic last year but it will interesting to see how he handles the longer PATs. There were no issues last night in other games. If your watching at home or at the stadium you will see the 50 yard line markers painted in all gold. They will be gold all season across every NFL stadium to commemorate the 50th Super Bowl.
We will have our game recap on Monday.
