The 12th pick belongs to the Cleveland Browns who also hold the 19th pick in the 1st round as well courtesy of the Sammy Watkins Buffalo trade of last draft. Head coach Mike Pettine went 7-9 in his first season with Browns amid sloppy quarterback play and trouble wide receiver Josh Gordon missing most of the season. Brian Hoyer went to the Texans this offseason and last year’s 1st round pick Johnny Manziel is currently in rehab for his ongoing issues. The Browns signed journeyman Josh McCown to a 4 year deal even after his miserable season in Tampa. They have been rumored to still be seeking out Sam Bradford even after he was traded to the Eagles so it remains to be seen which way Cleveland goes at the quarterback spot this year. The status of Pro Bowl wideout Josh Gordon remains up in the air based on his trouble with drugs and the law. The Browns signed Brian Hartline from the Dolphins and Dwayne Bowe from the Chiefs to bring a veteran presence to the position. Tramon Williams was brought over from Green Bay to replace cornerback Buster Skrine who left for the Jets. The team’s offensive line is pretty stable with Alex Mack and Pro Bowler Joe Thomas, but the quarterback and wide receiver position still remain a question mark even after the free agent signings. Owning the 12th and 19th picks respectively will allow the front office to be creative should they chose to move up or down in the 1st round. With the 12th pick in the 2015 Birds Scoop Mock Draft the Cleveland Browns select…
Amari Cooper- Wide Receiver (Alabama)
With the uncertainty surrounding Gordon and his future in the NFL the Browns need to ensure they have playmakers for the future. Cooper was hands down the best receiver in college last year and is probably even more NFL ready than Kevin White who went at pick 10 to St. Louis in our mock draft. He had a great combine as well to further entrance himself as one of the first two receivers taken in this draft. He competed against the highest level of competition in the SEC and dominated mostly every game including the Iron Bowl against Auburn. The Browns made a trade in a previous draft where they passed on both Julio Jones and AJ Green. I don’t believe they will do that again in this draft with Cooper. While the quarterback position remains a big concern for the team drafting Cooper would be a nice start to the process. He will need to work on his drops as he’s had 13 over the past two seasons with Alabama. The signings of Hartline and Bowe should be nice veteran leadership to go along with Andrew Hawkins for Cooper to learn from. I think pick 12 was too early to take a chance on the 3rd best quarterback like Brett Hundley, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they still own pick 19 they didn’t take a chance based on the troubles with Manziel.
Impact on the Eagles
Cooper coming off the board at 12 would probably mean that Bresha Perriman of Central Florida will be taken very quickly after that by a team in need of receiver. The Eagles have held a pre draft visit with Perriman so there could be interest there. In order to select him, though, it might require trading up in the 1stround which I’m not sure if the Eagles are comfortable in doing that. It really depends how highly they think of Perriman or Devante Parker for that matter who is the other top wideout left on the board after Cooper is taken.
