An easy task of buying a jersey and supporting the Eagles’ has now become very difficult over the last 2 years. All of us have had DeSean, Shady, Foles’ and/or Maclin gear. We all like wearing jerseys to games (wearing a jersey while not at a game is a violation) to show our support of a particular player. In the end it’s about the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. We pay for the name on the back though. Ultimately, we end up wasting lots of money.
Lets take a look at what players we should avoid. As mentioned in my salary cap blog Maxwell and Murray could only be here for 2 and 3 years respectively. I would avoid buying either jersey. Buying any QB’s jersey on this roster could ultimately cost you as well. No one is buying a Sanchez jersey so that doesn’t matter but be weary of a Bradford jersey. You never know what Chip is thinking regarding the QB position. If I recall last year he said he wanted Nick Foles “to be the QB for the next 1000 years.” Kendricks’ and Boykin jerseys I would also stay away from. There have been rumors the coaching staff isn’t particularly high on Kendricks’ and he could be playing else where before the 2015 season begins. Same goes for Boykin, as the team refuses to play him outside. Teams don’t often extend slot corners so this could be his last year with the Eagles’. DO NOT BUY A RILEY COOPER JERSEY! No sense wasting your money as he is over paid and might not be here next year.
There is a nice a group of players who could potentially be here for a while. This next list of guys I would consider jersey worthy. If Fletcher Cox gets a contract extension, which we all assume he will at some point, the 91 jersey is a good one to wear. Jordan Matthews is in the 2nd year of a rookie deal, was hand selected by Chip and had a good first year. Not to mention the last time you had an 81 jersey you wanted walk into on coming traffic. You don’t see a lot of OL jerseys but if you wanted to be different having a Kelce or Lane Johnson jersey would be a nice start. Kelce is in the second year of big contract extension and arguably the best center in the league. Johnson is a young RT with lots of potential. The Eagles’ took him 4th overall in the 2013 draft and expect him to be a cog in this offense for a decade. Kiko Alonso could potentially be another good jersey, but not until next year. Chip traded the best RB in franchise history for him, so I expect he will be here for a while. Just wait and see how the knees hold up. Connor Barwin is arguably the star of this Defense. He just reworked his contract this past Wednesday and will be here for years to come.
Would you like an easy answer to this question? Just go out and buy a fan favorite jersey from yesteryear. McNabb, Westbrook, Dawkins, Cunningham, Trotter, Joyner, Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Harold Carmichael, Mike Quick and Ron Jaworski are all good ones to name a few. If you bought a Shady jersey, keep it. Theres a good chance his record won’t be broken for a long time if at all as the league has transformed into a “passing” league. He will be remembered as an all time Eagle.
